Baptisia (bap-tiz'-i-ah)

Blue False Indigo

Beautiful spires of pealike flowers in shades of blue and white appear in May to June, followed by attractive seedpods. An outstanding foliage plant. Requires a season or two to establish, but very long-lived. Baptisia is derived from the Greek word, bapto, meaning to dye, because an inferior coloring substance is derived from some species. Companion Plants: Miscanthus, Penstemon, Guara, Iris.

'Purple Smoke'

Smokey violet, lupin-like flowers & grey-green, clover like foliage on charcoal stems. Grows 3-4 feet tall.

Showy indigo-blue blooms appear mid to late spring, followed by 2-3" long black seeds pods which remain attractive well into winter. Blooms are atop soft blue green foliage. Resembles a small roundish bush 2-3' in height. Drought tolerant, average water needs.
